'Grassroot Challenge' Winners

On Thursday 23rd November representatives from St. Gerard's Eco Committee attended the Ulster Wildlife 'Grassroots Challenge' Award Ceremony at the W5 in the SSE Arena. While at the event the students got the opportunity to attend a VIP reception with the wildlife presenter Simon King and were delighted to receive the 'Best School Award' for their participation in the project. Daire Donnelly also received an individual award and a signed copy of Simon King's new book for inspiring others within the eco-club and at school

The project involved improving their school grounds for wildlife. By developing a 'Wild Ideas' environmental project, they were able to learn about nature & wildlife on their doorstep and gain skills in bird box and mini beast hotel building, bird feeding, pond dipping etc. By participating they gained confidence learning about the world around them, working with each other, caring for other living creatures and taking pride in their achievements. Students are continuing to help wildlife as part of their eco-club.
