St.Gerard's School & Support Services

Achieve, Believe, Celebrate

KS3

Year 8, 9 & 10

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 we provide an inclusive and creative curriculum which is regularly reviewed in order to ensure all pupils receive a broad, balanced and engaging education. Pupils enter Year 8 either from St. Gerard's primary department or from other primary schools. An individualised curriculum, small class size and classroom assistant support help each child achieve his or her full potential.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Pupils follow the National Curriculum in KS3, while maintaining a strong focus on literacy and numeracy.

Pupils study the majority of subjects with their class teacher, while 'specialist' teachers provide practical subjects such as

music, art, science, technology & design, home economics and PE.

Pastoral Care

St. Gerard's is a happy school and in KS3 we strive for an environment which is caring, optimistic and encouraging for all pupils.

Each class is under the care of a class teacher and classroom assistant who know the pupils very well. Our pupils are valued as individuals and know they have a voice. Initiatives such as the School Council, Friendship Club, Social Time and weekly assembly, encourage pupils to voice any concerns they may have and these are swiftly taken care of. We have a school counsellor to provide extra support to pupils as required.

Pupil success is celebrated through 'pupil of the week' and 'pupil of the month' as well as class rewards.

Transition

We understand that transitioning into secondary school is a major step for our pupils. We have a comprehensive programme and organise many events to ensure that this transition goes smoothly, such as open days for parents and pupils, taster days for pupils, induction meetings for parents and a termly 'Doughnut Party' to enable feedback to the Senior Leadership Team. For pupils who need extra help settling into secondary school we offer Friendship Club, Counselling and Social Skills classes as well as one-to-one support.

Extra-Curricular

Pupils are encouraged to take a full and active part in school life.

Some of the extra curricular activities we offer at KS3 include gymnastics, choir, John Muir Award, cycling and youth club.
