Everybody Active

Everybody Active have provided coaches to come into St. Gerard’s to work with our young people. Pablo and Brian have set up a programme of sporting events to deliver to all KS3 students throughout the year. They will be coming in for 6 weeks blocks on Wednesday afternoons each term. They have already started with the Year 9 classes. All KS3 students will take part in the 6 sessions which provide all the students with new and exciting sporting experiences.

Sessions 1- Boccia; This is a Paralympic sport that is similar to lawn bowls. The students need to judge the speed of the bowl and adjust as they see fit. It took the students a while to get the hang of it but all students got better as the session progressed and had a lot of fun.

Session2- New Age Curling; This was a brilliant and enjoyable session where the students again had to aim at a target and use tactics to knock their opponents puck out of the way and at the same time make sure that they scored some points. The star of the show without a doubt was Christina Harte from year 9B, who scored points at will and did not lose a match all afternoon. The shot of the day had to go to Golden, who knocked 2 opponents pucks out of the scoring area and got his in a great position.

Session3- Blind Football- Here the students are blindfolded and the ball has a bell. Instead of using their sight to play with the ball the students have to rely on their hearing as the ball has a bell inside it. This was challenging for the students, who did their best and enjoyed the session.

Session4- Goalball- Similar to Blind Football the students are blindfolded. The have to use their hearing to stop shots that come from the other team. There are 3 players in each team. They work together to shot and block shots. This was also fun for the students who were not playing as they could see the shot that the players could not. Drills were done beforehand to get the students used to the skills before the games were played.

Session 5 and 6- Wheelchair Basketball- These are the next ones up for the Year 9 students. Wheelchairs are going to be brought into the school and the Year 9 students are looking forward to trying another new sport.

These sessions have been brilliant for the students and staff alike. St. Gerard’s would like to thank Everybody Active for providing these free sessions that do not cost the students or school any money.
